Expressive Arts Practice for Self Discovery: taking ourselves on a journey deep within

guided only by what we know and what we don't know

Hello and welcome

How awesome that you are here. If you haven’t already, be sure to hop onto our Who Be Me page on our site so that you can learn more about this wonderful adventure and what it involves.

You don’t need much - any art supplies or bits and bobs you have lying around the house will do. If you’re really itching to get “art supplies”, any local budget department store or dollar store will have decent enough materials to get you started and experimenting without breaking the budget. You can always grab better quality items if you really start loving a particular medium.

ALSO, and this is very important, remember that expressive arts are not just visual arts. They are anything and everything creative that acts as a vehicle of expression. So bring your song, your dance, your writing, your hairbush performances in the kitchen, your doodles on the top of your grocery list as you listen to your mother-in-law on the phone … all of it counts!

The posts do not at all need to be followed in order but there is some logic to the flow and so, if you begin the journey and start to feel a little lost or overwhelmed, take a deep breathe and scroll back to the very first post and begin there and start again.

All of these activities are designed to be revisited or repeated. It is often so fascinating and enlightening to come back and repeat an activity in a different frame of mind or mental space or over time, after new learning has settled in or fresh ground has been covered. Some of these are activities that can actually be done daily - in fact we do many of them regularly! So don’t feel constrained by how the blog is set out - your make it yours and a journey of you and take all the time you need and change direction or backtrack as often as delights you.

Be sure to check out (and subscribe to) our YouTube channel for some guidance videos and our very human version of “art class” with Kendall. She will be walking you through some easy to follow instruction on various techniques and ideas.

Lastly, please join our safe space so are part of our community and not travelling alone and we can be right beside you as you journey. You can join from the menu bar on the site or the community page.

We hope this will be such an exciting journey for you. We totally get that, along with exciting, it can also be nerve wracking or downright frightening so please reach out to the community if you are finding it bumpy. Also reach out just to have fun with the process.

Ah yes, process. We knew we were forgetting something. This is all about process and nothing at all about what the final “product“ looks like. Just let expectations go and we promise you, that is where the magic lies.

Let’s begin

See you in there
